Downtown Adelaide is surrounded by 19,000 acres of parkland. Among the 29 named parks, several museums, and a sports arena (The Adelaide Oval) are the Adelaide Zoo and Adelaide Botanic Garden. We visited both during our stay in December 2025.

We chose to visit the zoo on the hottest, sunniest day of our visit. Had we thought about it, we would have chosen a different day. At least three-quarters of the animals had retreated to their shelters to seek relief from the sun and heat, so we didn’t get to see many of them. But some were out, including one of their two pandas.

Here are photos of some of the animals we did see, followed by photos from Adelaide’s beautiful, expansive botanic garden.

Who knew meerkats were so chill?

The zoo constructed skywalks connecting several of the monkey enclosures so they could roam freely among them. A zookeeper entered one of the cages with food, and the monkeys wasted no time getting there.
The Southern Cassowary, native to Papua New Guinea and the north coast of Australia. It is an endangered species.

The Adelaide Botanic Garden

The Museum of Economic Botany is located near the center of the garden. We stepped inside just to see what was there. We were amazed by what we found!

It’s the last museum of its kind in the world. It’s home to an amazing permanent collection, much of which dates back to the original museum display 130 years ago. The building itself is a treasure and has been lovingly restored, featuring many original details.

The museum displays plant specimens, models, and creations from around the world, and explains how they have been (and still are) utilized for various purposes.
These are a few of the display cases that contain impressively realistic models of hundreds of varieties of apples and pears. They were made in the 1800s.

Meanwhile, back outside…

The Botanic Garden included a Rose and Rose Test Garden.

Other areas of the garden are not represented in these photos. It was huge, beautiful, and serene – and located a short walk from downtown Adelaide.
