During our stay in Funchal, Madeira, we visited the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. We were inspired to take dozens of photos, so we decided to create a post specifically for this destination.

Of course, it’s not only the destination, it’s also the journey! The best way to reach the garden is by cable car from downtown Funchal.

According to the garden’s website, the history of Monte Palace dates back to the 18th century, when the English Consul Charles Murray transformed the property around the Monte Church into a leisure farm, later known as “Quinta do Prazer.” In 1897, Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues acquired the property and, inspired by the palaces on the banks of the River Rhine, built a palatial house that was later transformed into the “Monte Palace Hotel.”

However, it was only in 1987 that Monte Palace began to take the form we know today, thanks to the innovative vision of José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo. A dedicated art collector and philanthropist, Berardo transformed Monte Palace into a world-renowned Tropical Garden, where nature and art merge in a sublime way.

The garden had a small museum with two floors of forgettable contemporary art, and one floor that contained some beautiful geodes, rocks, and minerals from all over the world.

Perhaps you’ve heard that in Funchal, it’s possible to ride a toboggan down the streets. It’s true! The street where the ride begins is right next to the garden. Jeff recorded video of some people taking a ride. No, we didn’t do it.
